To successfully sell a product or service, you need to know who are most likely to buy from you. This group of people who are likely to buy from you is your target market. Each target market will be unique based on the product or service on offer. Several businesses may end up aiming at the same target audience though and this is where competition will come in.
For example…
Let’s say Jiya has created a new kind of surface cleaning wipe that is not moist to touch but will moisten the surface it’s in contact with, ridding it of germs, grime and dirt. Her target audience would be parents, child care workers and possibly certain types of food outlets. Her reasons to aim at this group include the need for convenience and cleanliness but without the hassle. She doesn’t include professional cleaners in her target audience because she doesn’t believe many would be interested.
