What is Harvesting? Definition or Meaning

Posted by Bizversity

When you decide to discontinue certain lines of a product, you could employ what’s known as a harvesting strategy. This process involves retracting your marketing budget and efforts and letting the product sell out or until revenue hits a particular amount. An extreme form of a harvesting strategy is an exit strategy which is when you exit from the business altogether.

For example…

When Susan decided to stop making tropically themed artwork, she decided to harvest off her existing collection to make room for her new projects. This meant, she stopped blogging about her tropical pieces of art, selling them to art dealers and exhibiting them at shows. She only retained listings of the few she had left on her website so that the people who were browsing could consider it for purchase. Once she reached the sales target she was after, she removed the listings altogether and donated the last few pieces to charity.
